Hello grade one families! WOW- we cannot believe that this is our last full week in grade one! 😭 We are so excited to finish off our year with tonnes of fun and learning. We were blown away by the grade one summer tree art inspired by Canadian artist and illustrator Barbara Reid. Today we worked on words that end in -ed. Some words that end in -ed have a "d" sound at the end and some words have a "t" sound. For example, loved (d) and splashed (t)! We did such a great job reading several words and identifying the ending sound. In math, we have been measuring the distance between 2 different objects using string! So much fun. Today we did the big bad wolf blow test on our houses... ask me what we used to test them! Our houses were SO STURDY that none of them blew down! We added roofs and other details to our houses and created 3 little pigs and a wolf with plasticine. They were amazing. Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team 💚

Good afternoon grade one families! We had an amazing day of learning. This morning we watched a short film of the beloved story The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. Afterwards we used loose parts to create scenes and characters and wrote sentences to describe our loose part art. The film was wonderful and our loose part creations were AWESOME! We are finished our Reader's Theatre and our puppets are proudly displayed in our windows. This year we made a fall tree at the Leighton Art Centre, a winter tree using cool coloured paint, a spring tree out of tissue paper and today we started our summer tree art using plasticine. They are inspired by Canadian Artist Barbara Reid. Love the grade one team

Hello grade one families! We had a great start to the week. We worked on subtraction equations. We are getting really good at using number lines to help us figure out the answers. In literacy, we continued to perform our Reader's Theatre play of the Three Little Pigs. We looked at more toys that our parents loved to play with when they were young. One friend brought in an authentic Cabbage Patch Doll from 1985!!! It had a change of clothes, an adoption certificate and a birthday card. So cool! We are working on a Father's Day surprise!!! Can't wait to send them home later this week. Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team

Hello grade one families, Today we worked on our story writing. Our stories are coming along so nicely! We have been editing our stories on our own and with a classmate. Next we will edit them with a teacher! In math, we are still working on subtraction. Ask me about my favourite strategy that I use to help me solve subtraction equations. We can use our knowledge of doubles, doubles +/- 1, making ten, fact families, ten frames and pictures, using counters, using a number line and more! Today we built the cutest dolls and action figures! We used pipe cleaners, straws and beads to create these toys as part of our "Building Things" unit in science. They were a big hit and the grade ones were very excited to bring them home to show their families. We were talking about toys and wondering about the differences between toys built now, and toys built when our parents were kids! Mrs. Norrie's favourite toy was her Strawberry Shortcake doll and Mrs. Woolnough's favourite toy w...

Hi grade one families! We had a wonderful day in grade one. This morning our friend Mrs. Rankin brought in incredible antique artifacts for us to explore. Ask me about some of the artifacts. We chose 4 items that spoke to our hearts and wrote I see... I think... I wonder... and sketched the items! It was so much fun to see such beautiful antique artifacts from the past and learn all about what their purpose was and who used them. In math, we did a button sorting activity! Ask me what we had to do with the buttons. We have been talking about how each of the Canadian provinces have an official flag, an official bird and an official flower. Ask me what I remember about Alberta! Reminder: No school on Friday June 9th for students. Have a wonderful night  Love the grade one team

Good afternoon families, We have been learning about animal adaptations. Ask me why a monkey, a scorpion and a shark have tails! (Hint: it is for 3 different reasons!) Today we learned about animals and sea creatures with prickly spikes and why they are necessary. We love learning interesting facts about animals in grade one! We continued talking about Québec City's Winter Carnival and drew pictures and labelled all of the awesome winter activities that seemed fun to us. Ask me who Bonhomme is! Thank you for continuing to support our grade ones with their home reading! Please keep reading and bringing in your tickets for a chance to win prizes:) Have a wonderful weekend! Good afternoon families! Today we made puppets to go along with our Reader's Theatre play of The Three Little Pigs and they turned out SO cute!!! In math, we are working on solving word problems. Today we had exactly 14 cents to spend on groceries. Ask me which food items I chose to buy and how much they each cost. We showed our work through pictures, ten frames, words and both addition and subtraction equations. This afternoon we learned about Francophone communities in Canada and we talked about connections that we have with these communities. We watched a video about the Winter Carnival in Québec City and dreamed about eating poutine and fresh maple syrup with snow! Ask me what types of winter activities at the carnival looked really fun:)  In science, we planted a community vegetable garden. Ask me which vegetable I chose to plant. We also completed our Sunflower Life Cycle in our visual journals. We hope that your Mother's Day Sunflowers are thriving! Have a wonderful nigh...

Hello families, Today we practiced rehearsing our Three Little Pigs Reader's Theatre scripts. We are working hard on our fluency and expression! In math, we are still working on our doubles +1 as well as our "Making 10" addition strategy for solving equations. We were exploring a really fun online math resource that the students loved and asked us to include it on the blog so that they can show you how to use it to create and solve math problems ! https://www.coolmath4kids.com/manipulatives/ten-frame In science, we learned about the different purposes for building things: shelter, transportation, entertainment and comfort. We built different structures using classroom materials and identified what we built and what its purpose was. Yearbook Deadline is fast approaching for Yearbook sales. We do require a minimum sold before May 31 to proceed. To purchase a yearbook please log in to your MYCBE account, click on   School Fees   and add yearbook. If you are not sure if you h...

Hello grade one families! We hope you all had a wonderful long weekend. We had a busy day doing word work, writing, exploring doubles+1 and finishing up our 5 Senses science centres.  Looking forward to another fun week of exploring and learning. Monday May 29th is a professional learning day and there will be no school for students. Love the grade one team

Today we had a Math Talk about Doubles. Knowing our doubles by heart is so helpful for figuring out more challenging math equations! We know that if we know our doubles we can easily figure out, for example, 5 + 6. We know that 5 + 5 = 10, so we can quickly add one more to figure out that the answer is 11! We were able to enjoy going outside today. We had a lovely picnic and played on the playground 😊 In science, we finished our 5 Senses centres. We loved exploring our senses with hands on activities and experiments. Have a wonderful long weekend!  Love the grade one team

Hello grade one families, Today we started an exciting literacy project! We are doing Reader's Theatre of The Three Little Pigs. Today we received our scripts and in our small groups we decided who was going to read which lines. Ask me which role I played today. It was so much fun practicing our reading skills and using our imaginations and creativity while saying our lines.  In math, we are still working on learning and remembering our doubles addition. To go along with our urban art scenes, we have been creating rural art to show the differences between urban and rural areas. They are looking beautiful! This afternoon we read Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems. We are answering a lot of questions and making connections to our read-a-louds to show our understanding of stories. Ask me how Trixie was feeling when she realized that she left her stuffed bunny at the laundromat and how she was able to communicate her feelings. Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team

Good afternoon grade one families! Today we explored doubles addition ( 1+1=2,  2+2=4,  3+3=6, 4+4=8  etc.) We are working on our mental math skills as well as trying to improve our speed and accuracy. In literacy, we did word work and tried to figure out how many words we could spell using the letters: a c c h r s t Ask me how many words I was able to spell and some strategies I used to help myself. We are learning about the differences between rural and urban communities. We made lists of some of the things we might find in rural areas compared to urban areas. We then created beautiful urban scenes using only paper, scissors and glue! Our scenes included paved roads, sidewalks, tall buildings, stop signs, traffic lights, cars, airplanes in the sky and more! They turned out amazing. Today we had a lockdown practice and the grade ones did a great job staying calm, quiet and doing exactly what they were supposed to do. Well done grade ones. Thank you for understanding how ...

Happy Friday families! Today we sent home a tree seedling with every grade one student! There are care instructions on the packaging. "ALBERTA’S GRADE ONE TREE SEEDLING PROGRAM is a cherished tradition dating back to the 1960’s. The students receiving their seedlings today likely have parents and even grandparents who also planted a Grade One tree. They might even be able to show it to you! Alberta Forestry, Parks and Tourism distributes 70,000 Grade One seedlings every year. The two species of trees we distribute are native to Alberta and are commonly found in our forests." Today we continued to read and write words that end in "le" and words that have a "sh", "wh" and "th" sound within them. We did some Pete the Cat inspired math using addition and subtraction to figure out how many buttons Pete and his family had and how many buttons they lost. It was so much fun and we are doing really well with our addition and subtraction. Have a ...

Good afternoon grade one families! We had a busy fun-filled day! We are working on our doubles, friendly numbers that add up to 10, as well as fact families. Ask me to show you an example of a fact families.  7+3=10 3+7=10 10-7=3 10-3=7 We are learning about words that end with " le" as well as reviewing the sounds "sh", "th" & "wh". In science, we are learning all about our 5 senses! We started our centres which have been so much fun and include mystery bags with certain smells, mystery bags with different sounds, a taste bud centre, a braille centre where we are learning to write our names using braille, an adapting centre where we try to do up buttons without oven mitts and with oven mitts, a sight centre where we try to figure out extremely zoomed in photos of objects, a centre in which we describe how different materials feel and many more! We are loving it. Ask me for some examples of how our 5 senses help to keep us safe.  👀👂👃👅✋ T...

Hello grade one families! We had a great start to the week. We are reviewing what happens when we add or subtract 0 to/from a number as well as what happens when we add/subtract 10 to/from a number. We are doing a great job figuring out many different equations! Ask me to explain what adding means and what subtracting means. We read the sequel to Unicorns are the Worst... it is called Dragons are the Worst by Alex Willan. Ask me who the narrator of these stories are:) We brainstormed lots of reasons why Dragons are the Worst. We are working on using juicy descriptive words and sensory language in our creative writing. In science, we are continuing to learn all about the needs of plants and animals and today we discussed types of animals that are domesticated. Ask me for some examples of pets, zoo animals and farm animals! Have a wonderful evening and stay dry! Love the grade one team 💚

Hello grade one families! Today we finished up our stuffy measurement and did a "Which One Doesn't Belong" in math. We made sure to use math language when explaining our answers such as: odd/even, longer than, shorter than, wider than, 5+4=9, columns, rows, patterns, cylinders, triangles etc. We did an amazing job!!! We are on chapter 10 in Charlotte's Web. Ask me what the word gullible means! In science, we read "Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt" by Kate Messner. We drew and labelled at least 5 things happening up in the garden and 5 things happening down in the dirt. Ask me what I drew! Have a great evening! Love the grade one team

Hello grade one families! We read a book called "Unicorns are the Worst" by Alex Willan. Afterwards we did some writing about unicorns, goblins and anything we wanted using our imaginations! We have been reading and writing using words that end in "y" and make a long "e" sound, for example: mommy, silly, funny, bumpy, candy, hungry, and fluffy . We are almost done our red winged blackbird research projects! Ask me what red winged blackbirds eat and where they live.  Check out the very cool time lapse video we watched of the life cycle of a sunflower! Have a great night  Love the grade one team Reminder: No school for students Friday, May 5th.
