Hi grade one families! Yesterday we read Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak. We loved it! Many friends were reading along because they knew the story so well.  Today we started designing our own wild thing! We sketched a plan, and started writing about our wild thing. We are excited to show off the final product at conferences! In math, we have been "balancing" numbers. For example, we know that 5+5=10 , 4+6=10 and that 2+3+5=10 . We practiced balancing numbers and equations on our smartBoard scale and then used mini scales to balance different amounts of blocks in our classroom! We will continue exploring addition and subtraction using these fun learning tools. In social studies, we are still learning all about our community. Today we read "The Important Thing" by Margaret Wise Brown. We wrote and drew something important about Copperfield!  We continue to discuss and honour which "zone" we are in at different times throughout our school day. As

Happy Friday grade one families! Today we started a beautiful art project to represent our knowledge about seasonal changes. We are painting winter tree silhouettes in a night sky. Ask me what we sprinkled on our watercolour paint to add a little sparkle! We have been working hard on learning about the different Zones of Regulation, that everyone zone is okay, and strategies and tools to help us. This past week was focussed on the yellow zone. We know that if we are feeling silly, excited or nervous there are many ways to calm our bodies and our minds. In grade one, we practice belly breathing, rainbow breathing, body breaks, and we listen to relaxing music. Ask me what some of my favourite calming strategies are! We wrote about a time we were in the yellow zone, what our bodies felt like and some tools that we can use. We made little avatars of ourselves and we have started placing them in whatever zone we are in, in order to practice identifying and as a way to share our feelings wit

Good afternoon grade one families! We have been busy learning about the bossy E! Ask me what the bossy E at the end of CVC words does (consonant-vowel-consonant)! Our friends turned mad into made, tub into tube, cop into cope and so many others. Ask me some of the words I changed by adding a bossy E at the end 😁 We celebrated pink shirt day yesterday and designed our own shirt with messages about kindness and anti-bullying. Ask me what it means to be an Upstander! We continue to explore numbers to 100. Today we added and subtracted using our 100s charts and bingo chips. In social studies we have been learning about important landmarks within our community. Ask me for some examples! Stay warm and have a wonderful night 💗 Love the grade one team

Pink Shirt Day is Tomorrow! (plus read & roll)

February 22nd -   Pink Shirt Day Website Link Tomorrow at Copperfield School students and staff will continue to practice kindness and caring by recognizing PINK SHIRT DAY 2023 .  There will be 2 assemblies hosted by the morning and afternoon kindergarten classes to share about the origin, meaning and purpose for this important day. If you or your child has a pink shirt at home, please have your child wear it to school tomorrow to further show their support! This morning students "rolled" their way back into learning after the long weekend! Please ask your child about the "Roll & Read" activity, and words that end with  -ff, - ll, -ss, and -zz  that they practiced.  (see prictures for reference)

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL!

Image
Hello grade one families, Today we celebrated 100 days of grade one!!! We explored 100s charts. We counted by 10s to 100. We wrote about what it will be like when we are 100 years old... what we will look like, what we will eat, where we will live, and what we will do for fun! Some of our ideas were hilarious!!! We also practiced walking and talking like we were 100 years old. Some of us stayed in character all morning long:) We are recording 100 acts of kindness within our grade 1 community! Ask me for some examples of kindness within our classroom. This afternoon we worked on portraits of us at 100 years old. They are creative and adorable and we can't wait to show you the finished product. We hope that you have a wonderful and relaxing Family Day long weekend. Thank you for all that you do to support your child's learning in grade one.                       Love the grade one team 💗

Happy Valentine's Day Grade One Families! We had a VERY exciting day in grade one. We have the most loving, kind and thoughtful students. We incorporated Valentine's activities into a lot of our learning today. Ask me what my favourite part of the day was! This afternoon we decorated Valentine's bags and exchanged cards. It was so much fun! Tomorrow we will celebrate the 100th day of school- Woohoo! We have lots of math, writing and art planned all about numbers to 100. Happy Valentine's Day! Love the grade one team 💗

Good afternoon grade one families! We had a great start to the week in our classroom. In literacy, we looked at words with "all" and "oll" sounds. We created word chains by switching out the first letter of a word: for example: tall- fall- call- mall- small.  In math, we practiced adding doubles! Our grade ones did an amazing job! This afternoon we reviewed symmetry and created symmetrical bead art using pony beads and grid paper! Ask me about my design. We are excited to celebrate Valentine's Day tomorrow with our friends by incorporating love and kindness activities into our day! As we mentioned on the blog, students are welcome to bring in cards. Students are also welcome to bring in a personal treat to enjoy while we listen to a Valentine's story. Love the grade one team 💗

Happy Friday grade one families! Today we talked about and wrote about our school as a community! Some friends wrote about what grade they are in, their favourite subjects and what they love about school. We also talked about the importance of diversity and inclusion. Ask me what I wrote about! In math, we practiced addition using games and our SmartBoard. We made beautiful heart art for our windows. We know they are translucent because the sun can shine through them! We hope that our heart art fills people in the community with joy 💗 Have a wonderful weekend! Love the grade one team

Good afternoon grade one families! This morning we started off our day by doing word work activities. Ask me what game or activity I used and some words that I spelled. Today we built a huge 100s chart on our learning carpet! Ask me about a pattern I noticed. This afternoon we reviewed the difference between opaque and transparent by sorting and glueing different materials! We continue to focus on kindness and the zones of regulations through class discussions and stories.                                Love the grade one team

Good evening grade one families! We had a great start to the week. We read the book "In My Heart: A Book of Feelings" by Jo Witek. We are exploring different feelings and emotions and learning more about the Zones of Regulation. Ask me about the Zones of Regulation. We are building toolboxes with different strategies and "tools" to help us move from one zone to another. In math, we finished a 2D shape activity and we are continuing to explore addition with our base ten materials. In Social Studies, we are learning all about where we come from. Today we read a story called "A Family is a Family is a Family" by Sara O'Leary and discussed how each family is different and special. We will be writing about what makes our family unique. Love the grade one team
