Good afternoon grade one families! We had another busy and fun-filled few days. We finished our latest writing piece yesterday and worked on our drawing to go with it. Our writing is proudly displayed in the hallway. In math, we are still exploring friendly numbers that make 10! Yesterday we looked at four different rectangles filled with different treats and talked about why each one didn't belong. Our grade ones came up with so many creative answers that we decided to record all of our ideas in our math books. We have also been exploring symmetry. We drew half of a picture and used a mira to trace the other half. It was so cool! Today, we went outside for an impromptu snow exploration! We brought out pieces of black paper to catch snowflakes and magnifying glasses to get a closer look. Ask me what I noticed! Have a wonderful weekend! Love the grade one team

Good afternoon grade one families, We have been busy learning and having so much fun in grade one! We are continuing to focus on our writing. We are learning to add more details and transition words to our sentences.  We have been working on digraph sounds. Ask me what sounds "sh", "ch", "th" and "ck" make! Yesterday we learned about animals that live over and under the snow in the winter! Ask me for some examples of each! In math we are exploring addition. Today we used playing cards to add friendly numbers to ten! Ask me some ways that I can make ten using numbers 1-9. Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team

Good afternoon grade one families! We finished our snowman building challenge and sketched and labelled our snowmen in our visual journals.  Today we skip counted by 5s while playing "BUZZ"! Ask me how to play! We have been finding and building 2D shapes using objects and materials around our classroom. We have been learning about the sound that "c" and "h" make when they are together. Ask me to tell you some words that start with or end with the sound "ch"! Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team

Good afternoon grade one families! Welcome back and Happy New Year! We have had a wonderful first 2 days back to school with our grade ones. In literacy, we have been looking at alliteration. We read the story "So Much Snow" by Kristen Schroeder and noticed several examples of alliteration like "silent swirling", "flakes floating" and "mountains melting". We wrote about some of the fun things we did over winter break! Today we also read a story called "The Snail and the Whale" by Julia Donaldson. We noticed and talked about the characters, the setting, the problem, the details, solving the problem, and how we connected to the story. We LOVED the book. Ask me what it was about! In math, we have continued to explore 2D shapes in various sizes and orientations. We have also reviewed using base ten materials. In science, we have been building snowmen using paper, scissors, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks and tape. After reading "The Big
