Happy Spring Break Grade One Families!

Image
We had a great last day before spring break! In math, we are exploring and learning about 3 Dimensional shapes! We noticed that 3-D shapes are everywhere. Today we sorted different 3-D shapes according to their attributes. We also composed 3-Dimensional composite shapes. For example, someone built the Calgary Tower using cylinders, rectangular prisms, and a cone! In literacy, we have been reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, as a class. Ask me about some of the characters and the setting! We have been loving reading this together. We are so excited to see everyone in a week. In the meantime, we hope that you have a break filled with love, happiness, good health and lots of spring time fun! We are so proud of our grade ones and all of their amazing work so far this year. Love the grade one team 💗

Good afternoon grade one families! In math, we have been working on creating "Wild Thing" graphs! We have also been working on our "doubles" in addition. In literacy, we reviewed the bossy E! Ask me what the "bossy E" at the end of a word makes the vowel do. While continuing to learn about the Zones of Regulation, we did a story book scavenger hunt and looked for characters experiencing different emotions. We are starting to explore different artifacts and technology from the past.  Today we began exploring "The Witness Blanket"- a large scale work of Art created by Indigenous artist Cary Newman. Our students show such kindness, respect and empathy when we discuss Canada's history with residential schools. Have a wonderful evening! Love the grade one team 💙

Good afternoon Grade One Families, Today we celebrated the Spring Equinox. We listened to stories, brainstormed signs of spring and created loose part art to depict springtime scenes! They were absolutely amazing! Some of the things we love about spring in our grade one classroom include: hearing the birdies singing, feeling rain, seeing rainbows, playing outside, sunshine, warm weather, the smell of flowers, outdoor sports, fishing, golfing, and Easter!                   Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY grade one families... 💚💚💚 You will NOT believe what happened in our classroom today... while we were in gym, leprechauns came and played in the "playgrounds" (traps!) that we built for them. We could not figure out how they escaped the traps but we figured out that they used magic glitter. It was EVERYWHERE!!! They left us gold coins and letters. Our grade ones did an AMAZING job planning and creating the most elaborate, wonderful and creative traps for those mischievous leprechauns!  Thank you for sending in materials to help us with our building project! Monday is Spring Picture Day! Please remember to send in your child's reading minute forms and any pledges that they received! Thank you for your support during Read-A-Thon! Have a wonderful weekend! Love the grade one team

Hello grade one families! Please remember to bring in materials for our leprechaun traps that we are building tomorrow! Today we came up with plans to entice our leprechauns... we are SO excited! Today we found small "Wild Things" all around our classroom and created a graph on our learning carpet. We also recorded all of our observations from our lovely nature walk yesterday. Today one of our spotlight student brought in an awesome book that we really enjoyed called The Dark by Lemony Snicket.  Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team

Good afternoon grade one families! Today we finished writing about our "Wild Things!" We also played our "Wild Things" Double Bump math game. We love our new literacy centres. Ask me which ones I have worked on so far: Stamp it, Build it, Print it, Rhyme it and Read it! This afternoon we went on a nature walk around the pond to explore our senses in the winter. Ask me what I saw, what I felt, what I heard and what I smelled. What a beautiful day to venture into the community for some outdoor learning!  Please remember to gather a few things to build our leprechaun traps on Thursday.  Love the grade one team 💙💚💜

Hello grade one families! Today we played with our new amazing literacy folders! Ask me about the folders and what words we spelled. In math, we did one of our favourite activities called "Which One Doesn't Belong?" Ask me about it! We also played an addition game called "Equal or Not Equal!"  We started a read a loud today. We are so excited to listen to our teachers read Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. We are learning new vocabulary. Please talk to your child about what "injustice" means. Tomorrow we are going to share what we learned and discussed with our families. As we continue our snow exploration, today we discussed snow while thinking about our five senses. We talked about what snow looks like, what snow sounds like and what snow feels like! Ask me about some ideas that we shared as a class. We passed snow around in a sharing circle to remind ourselves what snow feels like in our hands. We started writing poetry about snow and so far it is

Good afternoon grade one families, We had a really fun day of learning. To celebrate Read-A-Thon, we made beautiful bookmarks with our grade five buddies! We also got to read using flashlights, twinkly lights and colour changing tea lights. Our grade one friends LOVE to read. We also read and sang along to a really fun "Pete the Cat" book as a group. Please continue to record your child's reading minutes for Read-A-Thon. We are so excited to see you all at conferences and celebrate your child's many successes! Have a wonderful weekend! Hello grade one families! Today we continued our favourite toy writing! Ask me which toy I wrote about.  We had a very special guest reader today. Mrs. Montgomery came to read to both of our classes and we were so excited to see her. Ask me about the beautiful story she read us called “The Invisible Web” by Patrice Karst. We watched a short documentary about Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley. It was so cool! Ask me what I learned in the short film. Afterwards we created lovely snowflakes with different loose parts. Ask me what materials I used and what I named my snowflake! We are excited to do some more outdoor learning as soon as it warms up a little bit. Have a wonderful evening!  Love the grade one team

Happy Monday grade one families! We have been working hard on addition. Today we read the Napping House by Audrey Wood and solved a math problem about the story. Ask me how many feet were in the bed! In literacy, we are practicing our best printing. We have also been learning about adding "ed" to the end of words to change them to past tense. We started working on a new exciting writing project about our favourite toy! 🧸 In science, we have continued to talk about animals in the winter. Ask me about an animal that migrates, an animal that hibernates and an animal that adapts to our cold winter weather. We finished our winter tree silhouette art. They look beautiful. We are so excited to share our hard with you at conferences later this week!                     Love the grade one team

Book Character Day!

Image
Monday is dress as a book character day  at Copperfield School! We talked as a class about what things might be possible to do if we do not have a "book costume" available at home (and mom or dad or anyone else who love us is not going to spend the entire weekend shopping or sewing! haha) Below are just three examples that I found with a quick Google search for "Book Day Characters."  Two of these cotumes only need coloured paper, cardboard, glue, scissors and a little bit of time & creativity. Please have fun finding a book and a character together with your child.    If You Give a Mouse a Cookie                             Written by: Laura Numeroff
