Hello Grade 1 Families,

We have been busy practicing our literacy skills. This week we are focused on punctuation or sentence stoppers - periods, question marks, and exclamation marks. As we learn about these, we continue to work on finger spacing and capitalization. Try practicing writing 1-2 sentences a night using our tools we have been learning! (examples: “My mom and I play!”, “The dog is big.”, “Can you see me go?”)

Math continues to be one of our favourite subjects and this week we started something new! We learned the concept of skip counting, especially by 10s, 5s, and 2s. Ask me to count to 100 by 10s or even 5s for a challenge!

In science, we observed our pumpkin seeds we planted the other week. They are currently getting water from a wet paper towel inside of a plastic bag- one in Mrs. Woolnough’s class and another in Mr. Graham’s. On Wednesday we observed the changes since we “planted” them. They have sprouted!! Ask me how much they have sprouted, and which class has the bigger sprout! A great scientist continuously observes and comes up with theories for our changing experiments. I wonder why one pumpkin is growing faster than the other? We are recording the Life Cycle of the pumpkin in our visual journal.

We were extremely lucky to have the Alberta Music Theatre Group come and put on a show for us on Tuesday. The whole school was able to see a fantastic showing of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

Our spotlight student continues to happen each day and this week is the first week for students. We are so lucky to have such fascinating peers with different hobbies, interests, and backgrounds. Great job and thank you to our first spotlight students for being brave and being an amazing example to our classes! 💗

We love how many students are keeping up with home reading and strongly encourage reading every night or whenever possible in our busy lives. Reading just 20 minutes a night helps us grow as learners (even for adults!). Thank you for supporting your child's literacy through home reading.

Good afternoon grade one families! We had an amazing day of learning. This morning we watched a short film of the beloved story The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. Afterwards we used loose parts to create scenes and characters and wrote sentences to describe our loose part art. The film was wonderful and our loose part creations were AWESOME! We are finished our Reader's Theatre and our puppets are proudly displayed in our windows. This year we made a fall tree at the Leighton Art Centre, a winter tree using cool coloured paint, a spring tree out of tissue paper and today we started our summer tree art using plasticine. They are inspired by Canadian Artist Barbara Reid. Love the grade one team

Hello grade one families, It was so wonderful to meet so many of you during conferences. Thank you for joining us to talk about your children and all of the learning and fun we have been experiencing together! Today we gathered as a school for an assembly to begin learning about National Truth and Reconciliation Week and Orange Shirt Day. We learned about the importance of Land Acknowledgement. Mr. Magowan shared his personal connection to the land where he grew up and told stories about how meaningful wind is to him. This week we will continue to learn about Indigenous history and ways through stories, videos and art.  We also read a book called "The Sharing Circle" by Theresa Larsen-Jonasson. We are going to have our own sharing circle tomorrow! During literacy, we brainstormed, drew and wrote words that start with the letter "P", using inventive kid spelling. Hello grade one families! WOW- we cannot believe that this is our last full week in grade one! 😭 We are so excited to finish off our year with tonnes of fun and learning. We were blown away by the grade one summer tree art inspired by Canadian artist and illustrator Barbara Reid. Today we worked on words that end in -ed. Some words that end in -ed have a "d" sound at the end and some words have a "t" sound. For example, loved (d) and splashed (t)! We did such a great job reading several words and identifying the ending sound. In math, we have been measuring the distance between 2 different objects using string! So much fun. Today we did the big bad wolf blow test on our houses... ask me what we used to test them! Our houses were SO STURDY that none of them blew down! We added roofs and other details to our houses and created 3 little pigs and a wolf with plasticine. They were amazing. Have a wonderful night! Love the grade one team 💚
