Hello grade one families!

Today we continued learning about the significance of Orange Shirt Day and why Every Child Matters. Ask me what I learned about Orange Shirt Day and why we are invited to wear an orange shirt OR our favourite shirt, on Thursday September 29th. Here is a video we watched together as a class. We had a class discussion afterwards and shared our feelings about what we learned, asked  questions and talked about how children should feel when they come to school. We all agreed that children should feel happy and safe at school.

We had our first sharing circle. We took turns sharing our feelings and practiced listening and being patient. We know how important it is to make sure that everyone feels safe, comfortable and heard, while it is their turn to share. We continue to focus on creating a warm, kind and supportive classroom. Ask me how I contributed to our classroom community with kindness today!

Over the last two days, both of our classes wrote in our journals about something that we did over the weekend and connected it to the land that we live on. Many friends shared wonderful connections and memories of biking, playing at the park, spending time in their backyard, and even going to the beach, with family and friends.

We explored the book "This Land is my Land", written and illustrated by Indigenous artist George Littlechild. We have started creating beautiful art inspired by him, using bold and vibrant colours.

Upcoming Dates:

  • Thursday September 29 - Orange Shirt Day - Wear an orange shirt OR wear your favourite shirt to school
  • Friday September 30 - NO SCHOOL - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Have a wonderful night!

Mrs Woolnough and Mrs. Bradshaw
